Sci-Fi Book Cover Design for Indie Authors
A cover that signals your world before readers read a single word.
Science fiction readers are genre-literate in a way few other audiences are. They know within half a second whether a cover belongs in their universe, or if it doesn't. A mismatched font, a stock image that doesn't fit the subgenre, a color palette that says “thriller” when you mean “space opera”, any of these costs you the click.
I design science fiction book covers that speak the visual language of your specific corner of the genre. Whether you're writing hard sci-fi, space opera, biopunk, dystopian fiction, or something that blurs the lines, the cover should feel like it already belongs on the shelf next to the books your readers love.
What a good sci-fi cover actually does
A great science fiction cover isn’t just attractive. It does three things quietly and immediately:
It signals the subgenre. A dark, biomorphic cover says something different than a starfield with a lone ship. Readers use these cues to decide if your book is for them.
It earns trust. Indie sci-fi has a reputation problem — one that a professional cover quietly dismantles. A polished, genre-fluent design tells readers you take your work as seriously as they take their reading.
It holds up in thumbnail. Most readers will see your cover at 150 pixels wide on an Amazon search page. Every element I design is tested at thumbnail size, not just full resolution.
Sci-fi subgenres I work in
I’ve designed covers across the full spectrum of science fiction, including:
Space opera and military sci-fi
Hard science fiction
Biopunk and genetic engineering fiction
Dystopian and post-apocalyptic
Solarpunk and hopepunk
Cyberpunk and techno-thriller
Science fantasy hybrids
First contact and alien civilizations
Not sure where your book lands? No problem. Half the fun is figuring out which visual language fits best.
What Clients Are Saying

This is the third project I’ve done with this artist. That right there should say quite a bit. I like his overall artistic vision, with great attention to detail and cooperation during the revision process. He also doesn't hesitate to offer his own input and opinions on the different directions we can take a project, which is also something I prefer. I hope to work with this artist again.

Dan was extremely professional, courteous and efficient. He delivered exactly what I wanted in a very timely manner, and had no qualms making all the changes I requested quickly and efficiently. He also provided good advice on my design. A pleasure to work with.

Highly recommend Dan. He was the perfect choice for the cover of “Ride the AI Bomb”. He took a concept that I felt good about and took it to a whole next level. I’m walking away with a cover for my book that far exceeds what most independent authors are putting out. It is on par with what you would expect from a major publishing house.
